FAQ

Custom Design Questions

I want a custom decal of my car, something similar to your Maritime Ford; how much will that cost me?

Take into consideration these usually take me up to 6 hours to complete. If it’s similar to one that's already done, it’s $65 to update it. If it is a complete new vehicle that I have to start a brand new design from reference pictures it’s $125*, not including tax, or materials. Materials roughly for a 6"H X 18"W is $~20, not including tax.

* if the design you have paid me for can be reused or repurposed in the future, I will definitely send you an offer of some sort, to show our appreciation of you initial order. 15% off the design price if you provide high resolution reference pictures.

What if the product I receive is faulty?

In an unlikely event that your item arrives faulty or damaged please email us at support@decalqueen.ca as soon as you receive your order with your full name, description of the item and images of the damage(s) to the goods. Once we assess the item we will refund the purchase price (does not include postage) or provide a replacement free of charge.

Inability to apply the decal correctly due to not reading the instructions does not mean the product is faulty. If you let me say I told you so, I might give you a discount for a replacement though.

Before Decal Installation

Important notes to consider before applying vinyl to any surface:

We are not responsible for any errors while applying the vinyl. Please be patient and take your time applying the label or decal. Our pros recommend being in a relaxed state.

Vinyl is not always easy to work with, especially in really hot or really cold conditions. Wind is the enemy.

Adhesive vinyl is only fully waterproof 24 hours AFTER application. The adhesive needs to cure in ideal temperatures.

Don't order decals for your project car, if the project car isn't ready to have them put on yet.

The silicone coating that prevents the vinyl from sticking to the paper backing of which it lays on, can dissipate if cut decals are left sitting for too long of periods before installed.

Certain home interior paints can and will reject the specialty adhesive used for the wall decal vinyl making it difficult to adhere. If you want to order a scrap piece to test, or specific color swatches to match your décor, don't be shy.

During application ensure that you do not handle the adhesive side of vinyl for too long as the naturally occurring oils on your hands can make it difficult for the vinyl to stick to the surface.

Embrace a Clean Slate

Not all clean slates are a blank slate, however. If you have pre-existing decals you want removed, do that now. We'll wait.

Not your first time at the rodeo? Well then, this break is ample time for you to gather all the necessary items to clean the area where you intend to put the decal and skip ahead when you're ready. Not a seasoned pro at the decal game? I'm a bit envious, but here are some sparkling tips:

For windows, reach for you ammonia free glass cleaner and a lint free cloth if you've got one - if not paper towel is good as gold. No ammonia free glass cleaner? When what you've got dries, go back in with a cloth that has been dampened with some good ol' iso 99 to rinse and repeat clean the surface. (cleaning the whole area with isopropyl works too, but at what cost in this economy?)

For painted exterior parts, wash car as normal. After car is dry enough for your needs take a lint free cloth that has been dampened with water, spritz a bit of iso 99 onto the cloth and wipe the area to ensure there's no oils or anything that could interfere with the decals adhesion.

For wall graphics, inspect the wall and patch any nail holes if needed. Then take warm soapy water and give the wall a wipe down making sure it's dust, residue, and lil sticky hand print free. Allow wall to dry before installing decal.

How to Install a Vinyl Decal

These are the quick and clean instrutions. Are you a visual learner? Maybe by the grace of god I have finally uploaded a how to vid here.

We loosely worded it as surfaces, cause in theory a wall decal, a car decal, and even company fleet graphics on an 18 wheeler are all applied the same way.

The surface you are applying the vinyl on must be completely clean and dry. Ensure the surface is free of dust, oil and dirt.

Make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling the vinyl.

Take a squeegee (or a credit card in place of one) and firmly sweeping it across the application tape on top of the cut vinyl graphic. This is helping to remove any tunneling (long air bubbles) that might have occurred during transportation and secures any pieces that might otherwise lift off the app tape when the backing is removed.

The couple inches of application tape that has been folded over and stuck onto the back grid of the backing is meant for you to hold onto. Peel off one side and slowly* start pulling the tape off the backing exposing the adhesive. The tape will pull the decal design off the backing and those couple extra inches helps you to not potentially touch the vinyl adhesive.

*Be very careful and slow when doing this part to make sure you don't tear the vinyl in the process. If at any time the vinyl does not want to come off the paper backing, lay the application tape back down and firmly run your squeegee over the part. Lift masking tape again to see if that worked. On very rare instances you might need to take a box cutter and loosen up, if you have a whole decal like that, I'll replace it unless it's from the pre-cut sale stack.

Once backing paper is removed, align design above desired surface, and when happy you can press the squeegee to the center of the decal. Making sure the graphic has contact with the surface move up and down from the center, working your way out to the sides.

Before removing the application tape, take notice of any air bubbles. They are easier to remove with the tape still protecting the vinyl. Take a box cutter and hold it so you would be slitting into the air bubble from it's base, leaving a longer cut than a poke but far less noticeable entry than the poke when the tape comes off in the end. Smush air out the slit, repeat.

Peel away transfer tape slowly and gently at angle starting from the top and pulling down. If the letters of your vinyl or decal start to lift with the transfer tape, lay tape back down and get the squeegee out. Firmly pressing down on the area again until vinyl is stuck on the surface.

Other FAQ's

At Decal Queen, our preferred method of shipping is Canada Post. If you are interested or require having your package shipped via a different courier, contact us and we'll be happy to meet your needs.

Can I amend or add to my order once placed?

Orders are final once you place them and they are paid for. It becomes very difficult and time consuming for us to go back and amend an order. Please remember by doin this you are not only putting a delay on your order but the other orders in the queue. However, if you really must change or add to an order please e-mail us immediately - preferably within 15 minutes of placing your order.

Can decals damage my surface?

Older furniture made with a printed (thin paper printed not like thick plastic) wood veneer can be a bad situation, but most surfaces are A-OK. To ease your mind, we offer surface test kits – a 4" × 1" vinyl piece in random colors of different vinyl series that we have available to see if your surface is feeling the love.

Are the vinyl decals removable?

They sure are! On glass, a straight edge razor can be your knight in shining armor. Just don't use it on your paint job. Other surfaces require a bit more effort depending on how long it's been on and surface texture. Wall decals made with correct vinyl is renter friendly.

Are the decals (and stickers) reusable?

While they are removable, they're not reusable due to the application process. Some of our more adventurous customers have managed to reuse larger decals that are connected on one piece with some spray adhesive.

Some stickers are repositionable, but if you're looking for that please specify when you place a custom order.

Are the decals easy to apply?

It can be intimidating if you've seen Rose do it. Working with a better safe than sorry attitude and a need for perfection she takes extra steps that most people would skip or never even think of. Don't get scared off by the process, take it one step at a time.

Can I customize a design from your catalog?

Absolutely. We're all about giving you the power to make it uniquely yours.

What are decals made of? (and how, even though no one asked.)

The star of the show is vinyl - it's top-notch, premium stuff. Decals require specific design file types, which can be a bit fussy to recreate if you have something particular in mind. By the way, if you ever meet a graphic designer who doesn't know what a vector file is, run like the wind! For our shared sake, pay the ones that do for that precious vector file of your logo. It's pure gold in the decal kingdom and your future if you're a business owner.
